#015 The Illusion of Control, Authentic Confidence and Stepping into the Feminine with Maddy Moon

Body image and food obsession (aka food stress!) isn’t actually about how you look, or what you eat.  There is much more to it than that.  It is deeper.  Healing requires going deeper. Disordered eating, and body shame, are symptoms.  The root of the struggle is what my guest and I chat about this week.  Maddy and I know this area well! We had both been in body image and food “issues” hell for years and years.  It doesn’t have to be that way for you.  May our conversation open your world up and inspire you to see your body, food and yourself in a whole new way =)

In this episode of IMperfectly Healthy, I interview Madelyn Moon –an author, podcast host, retreat leader and transformational life coach. She is a guiding force for women who want to stop over-thinking their lives away, and live with more trust, intuition and flow. Maddy Moon was driven by masculine energy for most of her life, which led her down a dangerous path. Always striving to do more, be more and accomplish more, she found herself disconnected from her body with multiple disordered eating patterns, a restlessness and a lack of confidence. Maddy healed her heart, spirit, body and mind by stepping into her unique feminine power, giving up the need for control and learning to surrender to a higher power. Maddy takes life by the reigns today by leading thousands of women across the world through their own transformational experiences via her podcast, Mind Body Musings, her website, and her global retreats.

You are going to hear Maddy share:

  • what was going beneath the surface of her struggle with food and her body image.
  • why letting your parents off the hook is KEY to your own happiness and fulfillment in life.
  • the real reason you are depriving yourself and/or others of love and nurture.
  • the importance of harmonizing the masculine and feminine parts of you
  • why Faith is a key to building your confidence and letting go of control.
  • how to find balance between asking for help and self-reliance.
  • how to begin trusting your intuition.
  • why some tools and practices work for you, and others don’t.
  • and SO much more!!!

#014 Your Unique Formula for a Thriving Life with Sherri Starr

When I think about my own journey with food, my body and my health, it comes down to a variety of factors.  The most pivotal being having an empowering mindset, listening to and trusting my body, being flexible and open to change, embracing the journey and going on deep journey within myself.  These are the foundational pieces of health and happiness that my guest, Sherri, and I chat about this week.

In this episode of IMperfectly Healthy, I interview Sherri Starr – a life, health, and happiness coach on a mission to guide and empower women to live in a body they love and a life that lights them up. Sherri’s passion for proactive wellness was sparked by the loss of her father to suicide, which resulted in new insights about the importance of participating fully in each moment of our precious lives.

You are going to hear Sherri share:

  • why having an empowering mindset is key to getting results.
  • how your beliefs shape your life and health.
  • why your food and body story can keep you stuck.
  • how to both enjoy the journey and strive for improvement/growth.
  • what it takes to sustain lasting change in your life and with your health.
  • how to create goals in alignment with your true self.
  • the importance of creating trust and connection with your own body (your most trusted advisor/expert).

See your food cravings in a new light

If you’re like I used to be, you have likely been struggling with food cravings forever. And, also like me, you’ve likely tried a number of diets and strategies that haven’t worked long term. I know how frustrating this can be, and how defeating it feels to try to “be good” all the time. Because it never works, right? You do well for a while, avoiding all those foods you love.  Then you end up giving in and devouring a whole bag of candy or chips.  Then it all goes out the window…

It doesn’t have to be that way.

I put this guide together so you can start to learn some foundational lifestyle habits that can help you find more confidence around your food choices. The information I’m sharing is not about deprivation or the latest strict diet; it’s about creating healthy sustainable habits that have been proven to both help keep cravings in check, and improve overall well-being at the same time.

Being on a Diet vs. Food as Medicine

There is a HUGE difference between being on a “diet” and using food as medicine.  Big huge difference.

When I say using food as medicine, I mean following certain guidelines with food as a way to heal a health condition, improve your overall health and well-being, or restore balance in your body.  This typically means taking certain foods out of your regular diet, and adding in new foods on purpose.  This is much different than being on a “diet”.

More insights from reading “Dessert is Stressed Spelled Backwards”:

  • There are 4 types of dysfunctional family systems: Each results in a false self, meaning you don’t learn how to solve problems, relate to others, and there is a lack of nurture and acceptance.
    1. Overachieving – human “doings”, pressure to succeed, perfectionism, be a “good” girl, “what others think is the most important”, self-critical, high expectations, discount yourself.
    2. Judgmental – focus on what is wrong with you, make you feel small and helpless, never enough, have to settle for less, abuse, build walls with others, fear of trust so become independent, “don’t feel your feelings, don’t ask questions”, lots on control, can’t be who you are, crying is weakness, discount your feelings, bury your feelings is the only way.
    3. Enmeshed – clinging family, all about the family, love from food or money, no lives of their own, no privacy, no boundaries, no secrets, cant have your own life, you are responsible for others happiness, make mom and dad feel good, tied to family through guilt and shame.
    4. Distant- lack of emotional involvement, not much loving expression, no praise, avoid emotion, fear of rejection develops and they hide, no intimacy, not prepared for life.

Take-away’s from the book, “Desserts is Stressed Spelled Backwards”.

I love this book on emotional eating and body image.  It is a deep dive into the real issues hiding behind emotional eating and the struggle with your body. I have pages and pages of amazing truths from this book. There are a small selection below.

  • You have the idea that if you change your appearance your problems will all go away. You blame every issue you have on not having a good enough body. Truth – your body is not the real problem.
  • Compulsive eating is a three-fold problem – physical, emotional, spiritual.
  • Key step is creating self-awareness. Which of my needs isn’t being met?
  • Self-sabotage – happens at the point at which you think major change in your life will occur and fear wins. You choose safety. Look at the consequences of reaching a goal or making a change in your life.  What fears and/or negative consequences come up?
  • Shifting from the self-punishment and self-criticism to self-acceptance and self-care is critical for finding peace.
