#027 Hungry for Happiness with Sam Skelly

“You cannot heal something you hate”
“Dieting and binge eating is rooted in fear.”
“Suppressed anger is one of the main reasons you are using food as a drug.”
“You have to decide you are worth it.”
These are just a few of the powerful truth bombs today’s guest shares in her book.  There are many more.  I highly suggest you listen to this episode, giving it your fullest presence…and read her book.
In this episode of IMperfectly Healthy, I interview Samantha Skelly – an entrepreneur, motivational speaker, best-selling author, and emotional eating expert who has revolutionized the weight loss industry by examining the individual and underlying causes of eating disorders. She has shared her mission on an international platform and continues to spread her message and transform the lives of thousands of people through the Phoenix Formula, motivational speaking engagements, the Hungry for Happiness podcast, worldwide international retreats, and her Amazon best-selling book, Hungry for Happiness: One Woman’s Guide From Fighting Food to Finding Freedom.
Hungry for Happiness is a movement of women dedicated to ending the fight with food and their bodies by addressing the underlying causes of emotional eating. When we heal our connection to our bodies and reestablish trust in ourselves, we realize our problems really have very little to do with food.
In this episode, you are going to hear Sam and I chat about:
  • her path to finding freedom from weight loss obsession, body shame, the diet/binge cycle, over-exercising and clean eating
  • the internal issues causing your struggle with your body.
  • how every choice you make is either self-loving or self-violent.
  • why suffering is a learned behavior.
  • the power of observation.
  • how your life is a reflection of your beliefs.
  • why you need to be willing to be in the process of transformation and healing, AND allow it to be messy.
  • how to let go of dieting and still honor your health.
  • how your identity is keeping you stuck.
  • why it is ok to not like your body.
  • why self-honesty is a KEY to transformation.
  • what self-acceptance truly is.
  • how to create self-trust.

#023 What Women Need to Know about Men with Josh Trent

I am SO excited about this episode.  It is a topic I have been wanting to cover for a while.  It is also an aspect of health and wholeness that I LOVE to talk about. Today we are talking about dating, relationships, communication and attraction,  from the perspective of a MAN….which is key.  We are also taking a look at the ways men struggle with body image and weight.

The man who courageously stepped up to the plate for this conversation, is my dear friend,  Josh Trent. Josh is the founder of Wellness Force, and a wellness industry influencer and coach.  He is also a top ranked iTunes podcast host of both Wellness Force Radio and the Fitness + Technology podcasts.

With over 13 years in the health and wellness industry, he leads the Wellness Force community in discovering physical and emotional intelligence to help men and women live life well.

His vision for Wellness Force is to empower over one million men and women in discovering the physical and emotional intelligence we need to live life well and enjoy the process. A KEY to enjoying that process is our relationships.  Josh and I love chatting about this topic together as friends, so here we are! =)

In this episode, you are going to hear Josh share:

  • The physical and emotional transformation he has gone through to get to where he is today.
  • how physical weight can be a manifestation of your inner world.
  • why you must take responsibility for the story you tell in your head about yourself, others and life.
  • his experience being faced with the modern man’s dilemma
  • how to handle the pressures and expectations put on both men and women in our culture to do it all, be it all and have it all.
  • his insight on male body image
  • what makes a woman most attractive.
  • what it takes to have a healthy, harmonious, connected partnership
  • what makes a man want to commit to a woman.
  • the difference between being a strong, successful woman and having “independent women syndrome”.
  • why your language dictates your life.
  • what courageous communication is and why it matters
  • why being perfect is actually unattractive.
  • how readiness, divine timing, willingness and courage all play out in dating and love.
  • what men want most from women

A few quotes to round out this topic from one of my favs from @createthelove.

“Fall in love with yourself first.  When we’re whole we can see clearly the types of people who are in front of us as our vision is not clouded by loneliness and insecurity.  It makes everything else so much easier because then we search for people that compliment us, not complete us.” – Mark Groves.

“Great love doesn’t leave.  It stays.  It communicates.  It tried to understand.  Great love doesn’t walk away.  It walks towards.” – Mark Groves

#022 Embracing the WHOLE Journey with Christa Orecchio

“The purpose of our journey is to restore ourselves to wholeness.” – Debbie Ford

What does wholeness mean to you?

When it comes to health and well-being, you can’t compartmentalize the parts of who you are.  You are a mental, emotional, physical and spiritual being.  A Whole Being.  Each part of You impacts the others.  Your emotions influence your digestion.  Your spirituality influences your nervous system.  Your thoughts influence your energy level.

As humans, we are on the path of understanding, honoring and integrating all these parts into one.

As Caroline Myss says,

“What drains your spirit drains your body. What fuels your spirit fuels your body.”

“The soul always knows what to do to heal itself. The challenge is to silence the mind”

“If healing required changing your job, would you do it? If healing required moving to another part of the country, would you do it? If healing required that you change most of your attitudes toward others and yourself, would you do so?”

In this episode of IMperfectly Healthy, I interview Christa Orecchio – a clinical and holistic nutritionist dedicated to helping individuals use food as medicine to heal from the root cause.  She helps people ignite the natural healing process of their minds, bodies, and spirits so that they can feel whole again.  She is the author of The Whole Journey Food as Medicine Cookbook, co-author of The Anti-Inflammatory Diet, and co-author of the best-seller How to Conceive Naturally and Have a Healthy Pregnancy After 30. Christa also hosts three health and wellness TV shows.

Christa has played a huge role on my path, both personally and professionally, over the last 9 years. She continues to be one of the top resources and referrals I pass on to my own friends, family and clients.   Christa is the ultimate expert on the super nitty-gritty scientific details of physical health and healing disease. She has spoken about them publicly, a whoooole lot. It was quite an honor to have her on the show sharing her heart and soul about her own path, and her passion for the mental/emotional/spiritual aspects of one’s whole journey in life.

In this episode, you are going to hear Christa share:

  • her story of a life-changing year where she discovered the power of food to heal physical and emotional health.  After transforming her own candida, thyroid and adrenal imbalances, she integrated all she learned and has been helping others do the same for over 8 years.
  • the importance of realizing there is no “there” to get to.
  • the impact your emotions, mind and energy have on your physical health.
  • her whole person approach to healing from the root cause of illness.
  • how primary foods – healthy relationships, a spiritual practice, a creative outlet, joyful movement, matter as much as what you eat.
  • how your physical ailments can have an emotional root cause.
  • why Spirituality has everything to do with your health and enjoyment of life.
  • how you are your own most powerful healer.
  • why trust is vital to healing.
  • simple ways to clear and recharge your energy body.
  • and SO much more!

#013 Slow Down, Ease Up and Heal with Torea Rodriguez

What if you didn’t have to rush?  What if it wasn’t so urgent?

How would your experience of life change if you slowed down? If you eased up on yourself? If you let go of all the pressure?

Could your body be asking for something pretty simple? A new way of being.

My guest and I both learned this new way of being through our own health challenges.

Is something in your life asking you to slow down and ease up?

In this episode of IMperfectly Healthy, I interview Torea Rodriguez, a certified Functional Diagnostic Nutrition® practitioner and Vitality Transformation Coach.

Toréa wasn’t always a health coach and functional medicine practitioner. In fact, she used to be a professional pilot flying jets for private families & charter companies out of the San Francisco Bay Area. It wasn’t until her diagnosis with two debilitating autoimmune diseases that led her down a path of exploration, transformation, and healing. Her undergraduate Biochemistry degree came in handy while she studied her way towards remission of both diseases. In that time, she became a certified Functional Diagnostic Nutrition® Practitioner and discovered her love of coaching. Today, she leads her executive clients through a unique transformational experience that helps restore health, vitality and performance so they focus on their priorities without burning out.

You are going to hear Toréa share:

  • the importance of mindset on your journey.
  • how healing is exploratory, not prescriptive.
  • why n=1 experiments are key to your healing.
  • how to not get overwhelmed and why less is more.
  • what is really going on with autoimmune illness: the 3 key ingredients
  • the need to keep stepping back and seeing the big picture.
  • why building a team is key.

Toréa is super smart and has a heart of gold.  She truly walks her talk and has been where you are.
