#025 The Truth about Food & Your Body with Kyla Sokoll-Ward

“For some reason, we are truly convinced that if we criticize ourselves, the criticism will lead to change. If we are harsh, we believe we will end up being kind. If we shame ourselves, we believe we end up loving ourselves. It has never been true, not for a moment, that shame leads to love. Only love leads to love.” – Geneen Roth

In this episode of IMperfectly Healthy, I interview Kyla Sokoll-Ward – a self-love coach on a mission to change the way women relate to themselves. She teaches women to love their fears, trust the universe, and redefine their worthiness so that they can fall in love with themselves and step into their badass feminine power. She spent years perfecting her body and diet, hoping it would bring her happiness (spoiler alert: it didn’t). But once she kicked her limiting beliefs, found body bliss, and embraced unconditional self-love, there was no turning back.

Kyla and I share a lot of truths about the food/body struggle.  We have both been there.  If you struggle in this area, I know it is hard to hear — its not about food and your body….b/c it really feels like it is.  We totally get that.  I am encouraging you to dive a little deeper for yourself.  Really think about how what we talk about, could apply to you and your life.

In this episode, you are going to hear Kyla and I chat about:

  • her path to finding freedom from orthorexia, body shame, the diet/binge cycle, over-exercising and clean eating righteousness.
  • how struggling with your body/food is only a symptom.
  • how your beliefs are at the core of your suffering.
  • why the end goal is not to always love your body.
  • the pattern we call the “Weighting” Game.
  • what you must give up to experience food freedom.
  • how the foundation of health is mental/emotional.
  • why we as humans hold on to struggle.
  • how disconnection and the food/body obsession go hand and hand.
  • how clean eating is often an excuse for disordered eating.
  • how we are seeking desired feelings through external means.

#023 What Women Need to Know about Men with Josh Trent

I am SO excited about this episode.  It is a topic I have been wanting to cover for a while.  It is also an aspect of health and wholeness that I LOVE to talk about. Today we are talking about dating, relationships, communication and attraction,  from the perspective of a MAN….which is key.  We are also taking a look at the ways men struggle with body image and weight.

The man who courageously stepped up to the plate for this conversation, is my dear friend,  Josh Trent. Josh is the founder of Wellness Force, and a wellness industry influencer and coach.  He is also a top ranked iTunes podcast host of both Wellness Force Radio and the Fitness + Technology podcasts.

With over 13 years in the health and wellness industry, he leads the Wellness Force community in discovering physical and emotional intelligence to help men and women live life well.

His vision for Wellness Force is to empower over one million men and women in discovering the physical and emotional intelligence we need to live life well and enjoy the process. A KEY to enjoying that process is our relationships.  Josh and I love chatting about this topic together as friends, so here we are! =)

In this episode, you are going to hear Josh share:

  • The physical and emotional transformation he has gone through to get to where he is today.
  • how physical weight can be a manifestation of your inner world.
  • why you must take responsibility for the story you tell in your head about yourself, others and life.
  • his experience being faced with the modern man’s dilemma
  • how to handle the pressures and expectations put on both men and women in our culture to do it all, be it all and have it all.
  • his insight on male body image
  • what makes a woman most attractive.
  • what it takes to have a healthy, harmonious, connected partnership
  • what makes a man want to commit to a woman.
  • the difference between being a strong, successful woman and having “independent women syndrome”.
  • why your language dictates your life.
  • what courageous communication is and why it matters
  • why being perfect is actually unattractive.
  • how readiness, divine timing, willingness and courage all play out in dating and love.
  • what men want most from women

A few quotes to round out this topic from one of my favs from @createthelove.

“Fall in love with yourself first.  When we’re whole we can see clearly the types of people who are in front of us as our vision is not clouded by loneliness and insecurity.  It makes everything else so much easier because then we search for people that compliment us, not complete us.” – Mark Groves.

“Great love doesn’t leave.  It stays.  It communicates.  It tried to understand.  Great love doesn’t walk away.  It walks towards.” – Mark Groves

Why something you don’t want persists.

Consider this…

When there is something in your life that won’t go away, despite your greatest efforts, could it be that this thing is serving you in some way?

Of course this is not conscious.  This “thing” is something you are working hard at getting rid of.  I get it.  It sounds crazy to think there would be any part of you that could be benefitting from it.  Right?

What if there were messages in this “thing” that you weren’t able to see on your own?

Being on a Diet vs. Food as Medicine

There is a HUGE difference between being on a “diet” and using food as medicine.  Big huge difference.

When I say using food as medicine, I mean following certain guidelines with food as a way to heal a health condition, improve your overall health and well-being, or restore balance in your body.  This typically means taking certain foods out of your regular diet, and adding in new foods on purpose.  This is much different than being on a “diet”.
